Every year on 18 May, the international museum community celebrates International Museum Day, established by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) in 1977. This year’s theme is:
"Museums Uniting a Divided World"
Museums, as spaces open to all, serve as institutions that can act as hubs for communication, dialogue, and inclusion, bringing audiences into contact with memory, critical thinking, emotion, and reflection. This year’s celebration focuses in particular on the themes of “Reducing inequality within and among countries”, “Promoting just, peaceful and inclusive societies”, and “Revitalising global partnerships for sustainable development”.
The Neraida Floating Museum, as part of this year’s celebration, is organising two free activities to take place on Saturday 16 May and Sunday 17 May 2026.
The aim of these activities is, on the one hand, to introduce younger audiences to the concept of the museum and foster their creative thinking through a children’s workshop, and on the other hand, to offer visitors of all ages the opportunity to learn about and reflect on key historical events through a thematic guided tour.
The activities are as follows:
“A Guide in My Own Museum!”
Saturday 16 May & Sunday 17 May, 11:00–12:00
Children’s workshop for ages 6–12
This year, we celebrate International Museum Day by creating a… museum! Children take on the role of curators: they select objects, evaluate them, arrange them in space, and explain their choices, creating their own miniature museum.
What will be the theme of your museum? Which exhibit deserves to be at the centre—and why? Would you like to guide us through your exhibition?
Participation is free of charge.
Pre-registration is required via email at [email protected], indicating the preferred date of participation, the age(s) of the child(ren), as well as the full name of the accompanying adult and a contact telephone number.
“Wars of the 20th Century”
Saturday 16 May & Sunday 17 May, 18:00–19:00
Thematic guided tour for the general public
The previous century, like most periods in human history, was marked by numerous armed conflicts, some local and others regional or global in scale. Through selected artefacts from the Neraida Floating Museum, which provide historical context to the exhibition, participants will explore key conflicts of the 20th century, examining their short- and long-term geopolitical, social, and economic consequences.
This journey through time will offer an opportunity for reflection during a particularly tense period in contemporary history.
Participation is free of charge and open to all ages. The tour will conclude with a visit to the ship’s deck.
Pre-registration is required via email at [email protected], indicating the preferred date, the number and full names of participants, and a contact telephone number.
Participation in all Museum activities is free of charge.
